Job Vacancy: ASEN Chair

The Association for the Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism (ASEN) intend to appoint a Chair. This will be a three-year appointment in the first instance. An expenses budget of £1200 per year is available.

ASEN’s mission is to promote the academic study of nationalism and ethnicity. To meet this mission ASEN publishes two journals – Nations and Nationalism and Studies in Ethnicity and Nationalism. It runs a conference each year, a series of seminars, and publishes a bimonthly newsletter. ASEN also works with other organisations and institutions to put on workshops and conferences.

The Chair will be responsible for overseeing the work of ASEN. Specific tasks include:

  • Support and liaise with the ASEN Coordinator (a part-time paid position responsible for the day-to-day running of ASEN)
  • Attend and chair meetings of the Steering Committee (a quarterly meeting of the ASEN President, and four Vice-Presidents), with the Coordinator and others co-opted for specific reasons)
  • Report annually to the International Advisory Committee (IAC) and the Annual General Meeting (AGM) , both of which take place during the annual conference

The ideal candidate would be an academic in full-time employment at a university, either in the UK or possibly in the Republic of Ireland or a western European country. S/he should have an academic interest in the study of some aspect of ethnicity or nationalism.

The post of Chair could be linked to an editorial role on the journal Nations and Nationalism if that seemed appropriate.

If you wish to apply, please send a cover letter (max one page) and CV (max two pages) to asen@asen.ac.uk by 1 July 2018. Interviews will be held soon after.
