Viewpoints, Reviews, and Research Notes

Viewpoint Articles

Occasionally the journal publishes articles which express an author’s particular viewpoint on a topic or theoretical issues under the heading “Viewpoint”.

Viewpoint articles are commissioned and reviewed by the editors.

The normal length for Viewpoint Articles will be 3,000-7,000 words.

Review Articles

A review article should not simply be longer than a single book review but qualitatively different. Normally a review article would consider more than one book. In doing so it should not be a series of separate reviews but conceived as an article which examines themes and debates in the particular field treated by the books under review.

In exceptional cases a review article could focus on a single book. The book in question would need to be an especially significant publication. The article in turn should relate the book to other recent literature in the field and examine the distinctive contribution it makes within that field.

Review articles are reviewed by the editors

The normal length for review articles will be 2,000-3,000 words.

Research Notes

The journal also publishes Research Notes.

Research Notes are shorter than regular articles, seeking to advance a new
argument, theoretical perspective, or methodological approach in the study of nationalism.

Research notes should be between 3,000-5,000 words.

General Nations and Nationalism guidelines with regards to manuscript
preparation and submission apply and Research Notes will be refereed in the usual way.
